Heat pump hot water
Explore a hot water system that suits your household, available space and timing.

Why consider this upgrade?
- Replace gas or conventional electric storage hot water with a system that draws heat from the surrounding air.
- Reduce the energy needed for an everyday essential, with a tank sized for your household.
- Use daytime solar generation to heat water and keep it in an insulated tank for later use.
- Take a practical step towards an all-electric home by replacing one of its gas appliances.
- Plan ahead while your existing system is still working, so you have time to consider capacity, placement and available support.
What needs checking?
- Current system, household demand and replacement urgency.
- Tank location, access, noise and installation conditions.
- Electrical, plumbing and removal work in the quote.
Compare what matters
You can discuss specific brands and models once the requirements for your home are understood.
| Consideration | What to discuss |
|---|---|
| Household fit | Capacity and recovery matched to household demand. |
| Location and noise | Space, placement, access and manufacturer requirements. |
| Controls | Heating schedules and how controls fit your routine. |
| Complete installation | Plumbing, electrical work, removal, warranties and service. |
How it fits your home
Turn daytime energy into hot water for later
A heat pump moves heat from the air into water, using less electricity than a conventional electric resistance system. It can be a useful first step when replacing gas hot water.
- Schedule heating during suitable daytime hours to use available rooftop solar. The tank stores that energy as hot water, so you do not need a battery for this benefit.
- A 270-litre tank is one size to consider. Household demand, showers, recovery time and available space determine the right capacity.
- Coordinate the replacement with your other electric appliances and solar plans, while giving priority to an unreliable or failed hot water system.
Running costs and household routines
- Victorian Government guidance indicates that replacing gas hot water with an efficient heat pump can save up to about $400 a year on energy bills. Your result depends on the existing system, hot water use, tariff and operating schedule.
- Choose equipment suited to local conditions and check noise, placement and heating controls. Confirm that the schedule still provides enough hot water when your household needs it.
- Ask for a household-specific payback estimate based on the final quote after support, expected energy use and maintenance.
- A suitable electricity plan may make daytime water heating more economical. From 1 October 2026, the opt-in Victorian Midday Power Saver offers eligible smart-meter households up to 24 kWh free between 11 am and 2 pm. Compare charges at other times as well.
Rebates and BooST support
- The Solar Victoria hot water rebate is up to $1,000 for eligible products, or up to $1,400 for products on its eligible locally made list. It covers 50% of the eligible purchase amount after other discounts, subject to the applicable cap and household eligibility.
- Victorian Energy Upgrades discounts may also apply. The amount depends on the existing system, approved replacement and certificate value. Ask the installer to show each discount once and explain any required customer contribution.
Up to $2,000 in BooST support per eligible household. This is applied to remaining eligible costs excluding GST, after other government rebates and subsidies. GST and any mandatory scheme co-payment remain payable by the resident. It is a household total, not an amount for each upgrade. Any unused amount is forfeited. Confirm BooST eligibility with the team, and ask your provider to check other scheme requirements and any minimum customer contribution.
Products and brands
HP Energy provides three product quotes to help you compare suitable options. The team will check the work required and installer availability. Choose “I know what I want” in the questionnaire to record a preferred brand or model; availability, suitability and subsidy eligibility will be checked for your circumstances.
